USB Internet on PC

Dear All,

I had a data link on my PC to connect to my local PC's in the network.I wanted to have internet on 1 of the PC's and thus i bought USB Internet from my GCM provider.The problem is that it gets connected and i get the public ip address but the internet doesnt work on the PC.

Can some please help me.

Is this PC connected somewhere else also by ethernet or such like?  Disconnect any ethernet or wireless, restart, plug in your USB key and try again. See if using the USB key alone gives you internet.

I have one and it works fine, but other connections can take priority so I disconnect them.

Hi

From your scenario, I understand (correct me if I am wrong) the PC is connected to a network using a network cable and to get internet access you have connected the USB device.

Go to command prompt try to ping www.google.com see if it works. If it works then fine.
If it doesn't type ping 74.125.230.147 and see if you are geting reply.

If not unplug the network cable and try again and update here please.

Check internet options in control panel and see if settings are ok as well ( or internet explorer->tools->options then connections tab.

Hi,

YEs my PC is connected over the ethernet.If i disconnect the ethernet the internet over the USB works absolutely fine. but i want both of them to work fine.i mean while the ethernet is connected and while the usb is connected.

did you enable internet sharing in the network adapter properties? what os are you using usually you right click the adapter, properties, advanced and enable internet sharing

Trying to use both at the same time generally does not work. Windows uses the preferred connection and trying to use both confuses things. ... Thinkpads_User

information provided by you is not enough to understand right causes..

if you haven't access to the Internet from PC with plugged "USB dongle" in it - check following:
- system settings (check/fix/reinstall OS, if viruses found)
- antivirus/firewall software state
- drivers for "USB modem" from your provider
- ask your provider's tech support team for help

or tell us your Operating System, antivirus/firewall software installed and its state, modem model, internet provider name...

I will be more clear in my explanation.

On the ethernet of this PC i have a static IP address 192.168.0.120 with the default being 192.168.0.1.

in the above scenario i get the following route print output

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1

If the ethernet is only connected the local lan is working fine.

When i connect the usb internet stick i get a public ip address

and then my route print output is as follows:

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 78.89.X.X

The second default route is taken from the USB Internet.After this only the ethernet works and Internet doesnt work fine.

so, you have to change (reduce) metric of preffered default gateway
you can do it using script, for example

so, as you can see - metrics for both default gateways are the same - 276

so what default gateway do you prefer to use when both internet are available?

(from ethernet and from usb dongle)

My friend if u see the metric is not same.Ethernet is 276 and Internet is 296. I would like to use Internet from the USB dongle.

FYI, if metrics of same destination route are the same - Windows detect right gateway using some kind of watchdog and change gateways after some period of time. so this is cause of internet instability..

this vbs script must change metric of your gateway on USB modem huawei to 50, so route from usb modem became primary (default)

vbs files must be associated with C:\Windows\System32\wscript.exe

So just double click this file each time after connecting internet using usb-dongle

if script will not work for you you can simply change metric for usb dongle gw using folowing command

>route change 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 78.89.204.129 metric 50

Why, in the world would you want to put your computer on a public network? It will directly impact IT security, especially since you have provided some nice hackable information on a public forum. You shouldn't need or desire to directly connect to your public IP address "provided by the ISP".

If you need to multihome the computer, ONLY ONE NIC should be configured with a default gateway. Also, only the internal nic should allow Netbios. Also only one nic (the internal one) should register within DNS.

thanks for the information.but the IP isnt static and it changes everytime so thats the reason i put this information.
