Lost data after VM restart
hi,
I have a server hosted by another company. It is VM server on vSphere 4.0 with RAW disks connected, only system partition is also virtual.
Today when I restarted Windows 2008 on server, I have lost all the files from RAW disks saved after 15:30 yesterday. File recovery tools does not show any tracks of them at all, and for sure they were there before restarts. For example some logs which I have been browsing.
What can be the reason? I am VM greenhorn, but I found some documentation saying about nonpersistent mode of disks, where data exist only until VM reset. Is it the case?
Just to mention that system partition data (virtual disk) has not been affected.
Please give me any hints, just want to know the reason.

Is the third party IT firm set-up to backup the VMs nightly? If so then it may have been an error linked with this opperation and maybe they have a recovery image for your data

the problem is, we do not have access to those settings. If you could just tell me possible reasons. As I see the VM was not turned off in the meantime.

We could ask for logs but not sure what logs could provide such informations ?
What have the hosting company stated the reason for data loss?
ASKER
nothing, they seem to be just home-learned people. Actually it's not a hosting company but company for which we deliver software. As far as we know, they have only basic knowledge on VMs
We would need far more information than logs, storage setup, SAN setup.
Ask the hoster the question why?

Time to move your hosting, if they have no expertise.
We would need to have full disclosure of how VMware is setup.
Do you know what the setup is? What are the terms of the Contract, Service Level Agreement?

Possible reasons are listed above, I would suggest checking server, restarting and see if data is missing.
