I have a site who has an Microsoft Small Business Server which is hosted on VMWare Esx 3i 3.5.0, 153 the server has a tape drive in it. We cannot see any mention of backups within the VMWare Instracture client, please can you help me find out if this server is backing up, can I do this from the client or must I do it from the console.

    Accepted Solution

ESXi 3.5 provides no support for Tape Based backup. e.g. the ESX hypervisor is not going to be able to use the tape drive. There is no tape drive support in the Hypervior ESXi.

You will possibly have to configured the tape drive to appear in the Windows VM, and use a Windows Backup application to use the tape drive.

Thank you. I am not going to try this, I think it is not a good solution to work with and therefore  prefer the top response and will work a different solution.
