Alternative to Windows Storage Server 2008

We are using Windows Storage Server 2003 and plan to upgrade to Windows Storage Server 2008.  Does anybody know of, or decided to use an alternative solution other than Windows Storage Server 2008 for file sharing?  We have thousands of files and folders for several departments that need to be secure and isolated.  Just researching options.
1 Solution
Get a NAS or build a Server using Linux. There are many distro's out there that are free and which you can setup for file-sharing, and there are also some that are specialized for this out of the box, and have additional functions, like integrated Groupware Server, Webserver, proxyserver etc., for example Zentyal or ClearOS:

You can also just use Windows 2008 R2. Are there particular Windows Storage Server features that you plan to use? Do you feel that Windows Server is deficient in some way (price, performance, manageability, scalability, availability, etc.)? It is hard to recommend any alternatives without knowing what the requirements are.
