Windows server 2003 fax printer will not install

We have a Windows Server 2003 installation on a single server.
This server has two fax modems - one for send the other for receive.
The Fax Service Manager is installed and faxes are received fine.
Some time ago (we are not sure when) the shared fax printer on the server was deleted.
This means we cannot send faxes and we need to re-install the Fax printer.

However when I goto Printers and Faxes on the server and click Install a local Fax printer I get the following error :

The requested operation cannot be completed. Check the connection to the fax printer and the fax printer configuration.

When I go and look in event viewer System Log there is a warning :
Printer Fax is pending deletion.

I have rebooted the server and get the same result.
I also tried stopping and starting the fax service - same result.
Each time I try and install a local fax printer I get the same error and the Warning is repeated in the System Log.

Any help greatly appreciated.

You may need to delete from the registry. Wondering if the service got hung and someone opted to delete the job and deleted fax printer by mistake.
Open regedit and search for the service name, all instances of it, delete the key and re-boot.
Take a backup of the registry first :)

fxssvc.exe

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services as a starting point and see if the service is listed there should be whatever the service name is in services

I have HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Fax
Should I delete the whole key (export it first of course) - then what?

dswattCommented:
restart the server, and you should see it removed from services, and the Printer/Fax error should be gone and you can re-install the drivers.

Question abandoned - we installed Server 2011 and Windows 7 on client PCs which fixed the issue.
