Windows Server 2008 backup and new server

I had a server running win 2008 crash due to hardware failure. I have a new server and i reinstalled windows 2008 server. My old server, i was using windows 2008 server backup software. When i created the backup, the backup software formatted my external drive and only the backup software could see the drive and data on the drive. If i plug that same drive into my new server running windows 2008, will the backup software see the data or will it reformat the drive to use like before.

did you use the disk for file backup or system images?
normally when installing server you can choose to restore during install..
depending on what roles and functions the server had

IT was a file backup and the server role was just a file server. I used the built in backup software within Server 2008. Use to be call NTBackup.

If i use the software will it see the data or will it try to reformat the drive. This is a clean installation of Server 2008.

If it was just a hardware failure only, the same harddisk must work on new hardware provided if the new hardware is of the same specifications
if not
i would highly recommend you to use Acronis Echo enterprise server
Create backup of the newly installed machine on external harddisk
Then take out the harddisk of the affected hardware and image that harddrive also using Acronis
Now insert the recovery cd of Acronis and choose the option of universal restore
It will restore the entire image of failed hardware hd on the new harddisk and it will run on new system
You will have to install the basic drivers only

WARNING
Restoring image of affected hardware harddisk will format your newly installed windows on new machine but since we have already created an image of the new harddisk so we can restore it later if required.

The server that crashed, the raid and the hard drives failed. So i cant image the drives. I just want to make sure that if i plug this external hard that i used on the old server, that my new server os will see the data and not try to reformat the drive once i open windows backup.

if you really don't trust it, then take a backup/image of the USB disk first?

Thank you, but i found out that to restore the files from windows back, you need to restore the image file windows back up created.
