SSIS packages can be stored in the database or in the file system.

dtx packages could also be stored in the file system.
Reza RadCommented:
when you deploy package on SQL Server;
they will be stored in the dbo.sysssispackages table
one record per each package will be created
and the field which contains whole package is "packagedata" which is IMAGE type and whole package will be stored there converted in binary format.

same thing exists about dts packages in same database, but table name is: dbo.sysdtspackages, field name and datatype is same

great post reza_rad:

Table "sysssispackagefolders" is name of table in which package is stored in MSDB database.

select * from msdb..sysssispackages
Invalid object name 'msdb..sysssispackages'.

select * from msdb..sysssispackagefolders
Invalid object name 'msdb..sysssispackagefolders'.

the above is on 2005.

select * from msdb..sysdtspackages is fine both on 2005 & 2000

so both 2000 and 2005 can be stored purely in file system or purely in msdb, right?
Reza RadCommented:
yes, you can deploy each of them on file system or sql server msdb as you like,
