"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

it is after a competition
2nd place is the 1st loser.
It was just a warm up race so to speak and that you will actually come first in the subsequent race.

>I took second place!
...I placed second in the competition.

>I'll take it for my first go
...I accept that result/rank (it), since it was my first attempt (go = go at it).

"go" used as "attempt", like in  "go at it" ,  "give it a go"
I finished second (out of all the other competitors) and I am very happy as it's my first attempt (at this competition/event).
In a queue(for example in an interview), you are allowing the first person(one) to go and observe what is the outcome of the first, and use this as an experience and then you want to proceed further.
And hence you have chosen as the second one.
