Fortinet high availability cost?

Anyone have 2 Fortinet Fortigate firewalls in an HA configuration? I'm trying to find out if I have to buy support on both. It seems ludicrous to pay for both when you'll only ever be using one at a time in an active/passive setup. I'm told by my var I can buy one without, but Fortinet support could "call me" on it and not support it if it has issues. I know other vendors don't do this. Any thoughts?

I would suggest a contract on both and running them in active-active to minimize the downtime in a failure and increase performance by allowing the units to load balance in this situation. If you choose to set of the units active-passive with the contract on one unit, if the active unit fails you can move the contract to the standby unit, but then won't be able to process a renewal on the failed unit since the contract has been moved. I know it might seem like a waste but depending on how mission critical your setup is I would think it is worth the cost. Hope that helps.

thanks. I spoke with them and they said essentially it had to have support because otherwise when it fails over it wouldn't receive support services. in any case they came down significantly in price to make the hurt not so much.
