Restore system from server 2008 backup?

I have been using the Windows Server Backup included with server 2008 to backup my data and the system volume.  I was under the impression that the system volume could be restored like the data.

However, when I try recover the system volume it says that the recovery can't be done to the original location.  Do I need to have another drive to restore it to?

I really don't want to redo the server from scratch and was under the impression that I could restore the volume similar to having an image that was created.,  Was I wrong?

Unfortunately I don't have the option "system state"  I've include a couple of screen shots to show you what I have.  Is there something I need to install on the server? Where system state should be Options if I choosse Select Volumes.

Looks like you selected the files rather than system state when you setup the backup.

You can't just select the windows files and restore them like normal files.

You would have to setup the job to backup system state or bare metal backup. Restore of those would be in conjunction with windows recovery environment on the dvd.

OK--so I need to completely reconfigure the server--is that right?

Yep. If you follow one of links I sent you, you should see a menu option on technet on the left for setup instructions.
