blank monitor after boot up

The computer seems to boot. But other than initial messages on monitor the screen stays blank. Last message I see is "auto adjust in progress". I tried the monitor on a laptop and it works fine. This is an hp pavillion a1610n. Do I have a bad video card? If so, can I install another one since I think the original is integrated into the motherboard. Not sure since I haven't opened up the case.

Does the monitor light stay green, or does it go back to orange?

I believe it stays blue.

You can try another video card, but if the monitor light is staying blue, it's probably not a video issue.

am I looking at a software boot up issue? hard to diagnose without being able to see anything. Maybe I should consider reloading the OS Windows XP. Not sure if the system will even boot from a CD.

Try booting from an XP cd and do a repair.

you can check if an external monitor shows a screen
you can test if it works ok in safe mode (hit F8 key during boot)
you can also test if the video works when booted from a live knoppix cd : ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V6.7.0CD-2011-08-01-EN.iso

The OS is Microsoft Windows XP Media Edition 2005. Computer owner is searching for the disks.

Nothing shows on the display when trying to startup in safe mode. The owner tried to do this but I wasn't there. I will try again when I am onsite.

so you have a screen during boot phase - yes?  if you like, you can install another video card; normally, the onboard one is disabled automatically - but if not, you can do that in the bios also
did you try booting from a bootable cd? - like knoppix, or the install cd?  that will also show if the card works

The monitor shows an "auto adusting in progress" message then goes blank. I don't see any logo for Windows,

for some strange reason computer is back to normal. seems like in checking for a phone outage and moving some wires around the computer was able to boot normally. must have been a loose connection or a short. Seems fair to split the points with nobus and dkrollCTN.

I plan on doing that when I get onsite. But at least I know that the video card works.
