internet explorer closes on certain websites
I have several computers where IE 8 is closing when opening certain websites including wikipedia. If I disable active scripting it doesn't crash. It does this for any users that logs on to the computer, including local admins. I have upgraded java and that didn't help. Suggestions?

If i go to wikipedia.org and type any word to lookup it closes ie. The website you sent does not cause it to close. And after going to that website I can successfully use wikipedia.
That is really unexpected positive event :)
I just wanted to test if it has to do wiuth your java - provbably not, because that site had java applet and wikipedia as a rule
prsents nothing special with respect to java.
Why did it affect ythat you can now open wikipedia - that's really difficult to understand

I'm not very well versed in java. But after clicking on the test link you suggested, the java console icon was present in the taskbar and when it was then i could use wikipedia without it crashing IE.

if i view wikipedia in compatibility mode it doesn't crash
>java console icon was present in the taskbar and when it was then i could use wikipedia without it crashing IE
sounds very strange - what would be the connection?
And what is compatibility mode?

if i disable add-ons in ie it doesn't crash

if i type the url for wikipedia then it doesn't crash when i run a search. If I google wikipedia and then click on the link and do a search it does crash.
And if you disable the add-ons it does not crash even when you go from Google?
And what kind of add-on you are implying?

i have not narrowed down the add-on.
How did you disable them ?
Are there any events in the application section of event viewer? will tell you if there's a plugin that's failed etc
XTADMIN--
"if i disable add-ons in ie it doesn't crash "
That would seem to pin point the problem is one or a few add-ons.
The procedure to pinpoint the culprits is to disable all add-ons and then enable half. If no problem, the culprit is not in that bunch so you can leave those add-ons enabled. If you have the problem again, the problem add-on is in that batch. Continue the enabling of half the add-ons in the suspect batch

XTADMIN--I think using IE Reset at this point is overkill. You seem to have already defined that the problem is with add-ons and not the other issues that Reset addresses. You will also have to do quite a bit of work to get your IE configuration back after a Reset.
