Recently migrated SBS2003 to Server 2008 Stand R2. Migrate DC, fsmo, dns, dhcp, etc.  SBS is still running but all everything is disabled.  New DC is running on VMware Esxi 4.1.  When I go to browse the network all I can see is the DC.  I have made sure that all the necessary services for Network Discovery are running. However I still cannot see any of my workstations or other servers on the network.

Sounds like network settings. Can you ping other computers on the network by IP? Is the DC the DHCP and DNS server? The other computers all see the new DC's IP as their DNS?

Workstations do see new server as DNS.

nslookup shows default server: dc-server/mtcld.local--which is correct
and Address is correct.

Make sure Computer Browser Service is started.

NetBios over TCP\IP is enabled.

Reboot the server.

What Event logs do you have?

The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. This may be a transient condition. A success message would be generated once the machine gets connected to the domain controller and Group Policy has succesfully processed. If you do not see a success message for several hours, then contact your administrator.

This server is the owner of the following FSMO role, but does not consider it valid. For the partition which contains the FSMO, this server has not replicated successfully with any of its partners since this server has been restarted. Replication errors are preventing validation of this role.

Operations which require contacting a FSMO operation master will fail until this condition is corrected.

FSMO Role: DC=MTCLD,DC=local

User Action:

1. Initial synchronization is the first early replications done by a system as it is starting. A failure to initially synchronize may explain why a FSMO role cannot be validated. This process is explained in KB article 305476.
2. This server has one or more replication partners, and replication is failing for all of these partners. Use the command repadmin /showrepl to display the replication errors.  Correct the error in question. For example there maybe problems with IP connectivity, DNS name resolution, or security authentication that are preventing successful replication.
3. In the rare event that all replication partners being down is an expected occurance, perhaps because of maintenance or a disaster recovery, you can force the role to be validated. This can be done by using NTDSUTIL.EXE to seize the role to the same server. This may be done using the steps provided in KB articles 255504 and 324801 on http://support.microsoft.com.

The following operations may be impacted:
Schema: You will no longer be able to modify the schema for this forest.
Domain Naming: You will no longer be able to add or remove domains from this forest.
PDC: You will no longer be able to perform primary domain controller operations, such as Group Policy updates and password resets for non-Active Directory Domain Services accounts.
RID: You will not be able to allocation new security identifiers for new user accounts, computer accounts or security groups.
Infrastructure: Cross-domain name references, such as universal group memberships, will not be updated properly if their target object is moved or renamed.

Create the below mentioned registry key on the master server

Under the

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

Create a key for  MaintainServerList –  set the value to yes

Create a key for IsDomainMaster -  set the value to true

Now on the backup server, create the below mentioned registry key

Under the

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

Create a key for  MaintainServerList –  set the value to yes

Create a key for IsDomainMaster -  set the value to false

Failing replication looks like.

from SERVER1 to DC-SERVER

Did you remove the SBS server? Do you have two DC running?

You need to make sure DNS can talk between the two.

If you finished the migration then SBS needs to be demoted

How can I test the DNS?  Also, I thought SBS servers cannot be demoted.

After demotion of the SBS would it still be accessible if it is on the network?  Should I leave them both on for some time to allow replication to continue in case somethings are still replicating?

You have to make that call I'm not for sure if everything is functioning properly. From the dcdiag looks like that server isn't functioning properly but if that is from SBS and it is missing fsmo roles that could be the reason why

Ha! well that not good.  However, after some extensive review we discovered and re ran replications and confirmed that everything appears to be running properly. the only issue we still face is the networking browsing issue.  We still have not demoted the SBS, but that is the last step. Fingers crossed!

Looks like I possibly discovered a major problem.  When we ran DC promo on new server, we changed domain function level to Server 2008 R2.  I am now looking at it on the server after and somehow it is running 2000 Native! Not really sure how this happened as this old dc server was a fresh install of sbs2003 when they started.
