It could be the system is set to install updates automatically. If not it could be malware. I would run a scan with malwarebytes, just to be sure the system is clean.

ran AV & malware scans, nothing found. Updates set to not auto update.
This laptop is on a domain with SCCM updates monthly

Try Malwarebytes to be sure... system is clean.
Since the laptop is logged onto a domain I would check to see if the server is trying to push updates on the end user. It is possible that when your monthly updates were applied, the latop was not present for the updates to be installed, and now that it is plugged into the domain the updates are installing.

You can use the autorun.exe from sys internals to find out what is running to see if there is anything suspecious.

Although reimaging the drive will solve the problem it will not really tell you why this is happening, but as long as you are happy with that

not happy. I have been round and round. Most solutions suggest the msicuu2 but that only helps if you have an idea what to clean. This pop up is completely generic "Preparring to install..." for 5 seconds then gone. I know I can reimage to resolve. Its not a solution. But time is not on my side either. Thanks.
