Probably not related to active directory, but more a client issue.
Execute EVENTVWR.exe and look for application crash in applications log.
You will see Excel error message.

Do the event log give any clue about what module crashes ?
You say the same problem happens for same user on several computers. Can other user open these same XLS/DOC files safely ?
Are you using roaming profiles ?

Hello,

Can you search for *.xlb files in user directory ?
c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\microsoft\excel or
c:\users\%username%\appdata\local\...

Move all thee *.xlb in trash or in a temp fodler. Try using excel again.

Bonne chance
