We have a software that has a local website built into the server. (we haven't wrote it, it was provided to use from the software company, we have only set it up on our server 2008 IIS 7)
The website interface searches documents that are located in the software as word document. We have moved the documents to a share folder on our server. So here is the question:

The local website does not have permission to open the documents on the share folder. How can I give that website permission to the share folder so it can open the files from the website? I tried to add the name of the server to the security of that folder but it did not work. Do I need to configure a network user to IIS and add that network user to the security of that share folder? If yes how can I do that?
Please only complete comments. I would really appreciate it since it is urgent.

Thank you all,
Paul

What I usually do is go into properties on the folder, security, add iis_iusrs, propagate permissions to files and sub folders.
If this is on another server you would need full control rights to do this.

Can any user on this computer access those files? How are the permissions set on the other computer? You could add full permissions to "everyone" on the other server. Then add iis_iusrs to the Administrators group temporarily. If it works then remove it an figure out the minimum rights it need to work.

It's got to be a permissions issue. You have two computers involved which just complicates the issue.

I added a network user to the  iis_iusrs group in web server and added that network user to the folder security in file server. But no luck. That user has permission to go to that file but when the user opens the website and tries to open a attachment that is located in that share folder, it doesn't let it to open it.
But, it lets the user to open the other attachments that are embedded within the application itself.

Thank you,
Paul

That's funny, I thought that's exactly the advice I gave.   "It's got to be a permissions issue."  "Usually giving permissions to iis_iusrs group works."
