windows 2008 repair

I had a server crash and i had to replace the server with a new server. I used Windows 2008 backup. I booted to the cd, and restored the last backup i had. Now when i get to the ctl+alt+del screen the mouse and keyboard work for a few seconds. This happens in safe mode as well. I want to reinstall windows 2008 without losing my data that was restored. If i do the following steps:

Boot from OS install disk.
Select next after making sure the language options are correct.
Select Repair option
Select CMD
CD into recovery
Type Dir
Run the StartRep.exe command in the list.

Will i loose my data?

If you are isntalling the OS on a partition that is different form your data partition, you will be fine.  Also, even if you run a fresh install, don't delete the old partition.  Windows Sevrer 2008 will create a windows.old folder that will have all of the olde data.  You can just pull it back from there.

So if i do a fresh install (even though it says it will delete data) I can pick a differnt location on my c drive without eraseing data.
if this is server 2008, you don't have to pick a different part of the C: drive, just pick the C drive.  make sure you have a good backup before proceeding with anything.
There are a lot of unknowns in the information provided so far.

1. Was the previous setup on a raid? What raid level? How is the new hardware different?
2. Was the OS and the data you need to save on the same physical disks?
3. Was the OS and the data you need to save on the same partition?
4. You have already restored from backup. Couldn't you do that again if needed?
5. What was the nature of the initial failure? Symptoms? Known root cause?

Those would go a long way in giving you an accurate response but there may be other important questions as well.
