Hmm.

Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_archiving that lists a range of organisations that backup web sites.

Don't think there is anything else like archive.org

A couple of Internet sites have tried to backup Geocities including archive.org  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeoCities#Archiving_GeoCities_websites

Although on most websites "once it's gone, it's gone" may well apply, there are some sites that still keep old pages online, just not directly linked from the "current" pages. These areas of the site often stop search engines from indexing them so they appear to have gone forever. Contacting the webmaster might yield the necessary information.

There is a news archive, if that is what you're looking for at:

http://news.google.co.uk/news/advanced_news_search?as_drrb=a

There has been discussion about Google abandoning this project, but there still appears to be some searchable content.

The transient nature of the web is a real pity because we no longer have a proper repository of historical material. Consider this statement: "Successful societies and institutions recognize the need to record their history - this provides a way to review the past, find explanations for current behaviour, and spot emerging trends." - Discuss!!

If you want old versions of software, there's always: http://www.oldversions.com/
