Restore Mailboxes

Hi All:

I have an Exchange Organization with two Exchange 2007 Servers. One of them (A) stores all the mailboxes and the other one (B) is the one that receives and sends mail. This is no EDGE server, just a normal Exchange sever to which the incoming / outgoing traffic is directed.

Now the serev A is dead, which means that for an unknown reason the machine does not even boot.

The incoming mail is being buffered in server B, so no incoming mail is being lost, which is the reason for server B to exist.

I have an updated copy of the "First Storage Group" Folder from server A in a backup server.

Can I use this backup folder to restore all the mailboxes in server B?

Thank you.

    Assisted Solution

Exchange 2007 server supports Database Portability under the same organization. so you can restore the data on another Exchange 2007 server in the same org. For this method to work, the another server must be configured with a storage group and logical database whose names are identical to those on the original server.

Then restore from the backup, changing the restore location to Server B, and the backup will be restored to the matching storage group and logical database names on Server B.

    Points to note:
    1. Both the servers should be under the same Organization and same Administrative Group.
    2. Need not worry about the Distinguished Name of the database since the same has no relevance in this case.

Once database is restored, you might not see the mailboxes under Recipients > Mailbox but under Disconnected.
you will need to reconnect them, you can use Exchange shell to connect them all in one go.

    All the best.

    Thanks for your reply.

What will happen with the messages that have been received after the crash of server A?

    Hello again.

I had to format server A completely and reinstall the OS (W2008R2)

Can I install Exchange 2007 and then restore the First Storage Group by simply restoring the file folders?
