1 megapixel webcam quality?

Purchasing a laptop for someone who wants to contact family via Facebook or Skype.

I normally look for integrated webcams with 2 megapixel cameras when purchasing laptops but (considering budget constraints in this instance) the only laptops I can get have a 1 megapixel integrated webcam, would there be a large sacrifice in quality as a result?

User in question will be on circa 8Mb Broadband and the main issue is picture quality he is receiving his end so don't see it being a major issue, just want to get reassurance before making a commitment.

Many thanks in advance.
5 Solutions
as video resolutions on facebook and skype are very low to preserve network performance, 1 megapixel and 2 megapixel do not have much difference.

1 megapixel is the equivalent of 720P HD so you should be fine. there are lots of security webcam demos on youtube that will show what a 1 megapixel camera looks like
In Skype's HD video spec, device solution should support 1280 x 720 at the rate of 24 frames per second. That is about 2.5Mbps in a perfect network environment.

Analog cameras deliver 640x480 resolution and can look very good, so a one megapixel camera has the potential to present a very good picture.  However, being a photographer, higher pixels do not always translate into a better picture.  It depends on the lens, the sensor, the lighting, and framerate, so be sure to demo it before purchasing.
Yes that should be enough as 1 megapixel is 720 p hd.
As you have a good network speed there will be no great differ b/w 1 mp and 2 mp.
