Is it USB powered?  If so, look for a dual USB cord or even better find one that uses it's own power source.  What you are describing will often happen when the system can't provide enough power.  - too many USB devices for an already loaded power supply or a weak USB design.

Simple question but does it work on another system?  Tried a different port or better yet, a USB hub?

You probably know this already but USB is often iffy.  Obviously Windows can do it normally.  I use Seagate drives for backup and can swap them fine.  Only issue I have seen is with the drive being shared and that hasn't happened for some time.

not shared is only working for ms backup, tried different port.

You mentioned your AV but it sounds like it only checks email.  Point being that many USB drives try to install some sort of backup or management software - AV could restrict and block access.

Grasping at straws maybe.  I would be testing another drive or testing that drive on another box.
