.I have two AIX server  serving out as  mysql db, on one server i see lot of connections in FIN_WAIT_2 state.
I compared the mywall, mbuf settings on both servers and they are same .
DO any one has idea why the connections whould stay in FIN_WAIT_2 state on only one server.

It could be that there is one particular client system that is connected only to that server and is behaving badly - plenty of good hits on google for aix and FIN_WAIT_2.

    Accepted Solution

Please compare the setting of the network tunable parameter tcp_keepintvl on both servers.
Maybe one server has been tuned in that aspect, whereas the other one hasn't.
A socket in FIN_WAIT2 will be cleaned up in (tcp_keepintvl/2 * tcp_keep_alive_retry) seconds.

    Check with no -o tcp_keepintvl

The default value is set to 150 half seconds. Multiplied with the (non-tunable) value of tcp_keep_alive_retry
which is 8 we have a timeout value of 10 minutes.

You can lower tcp_keepintvl down to let's say 30 (minimum is 1) to consequently achieve a timeout of 2 minutes.

    no -o tcp_keepintvl=30

Add the -p flag to make the setting last across reboots.

    no -p -o tcp_keepintvl=30

tcp_keepintvl is a Connect attribute, thus the changed setting will be effective for all new connections.

    Assisted Solution

..._keepidle would specify how soon first probe hits the wire (14400 halfseconds by default = 2 hours)

set also tcp_keepidle to value guessed in previous posts.
setting values to 1 will make small network slowdowns to kill a lot of connections
