I have 2 Win2k3 servers and 1 win2k8 server.  All are DCs.  The FSMO role holder is one of the Win2k3 servers.  The roles were never transferred to the Win2k8 server.  Now I need to introduce and promote a new Win2k8R2 server as a DC into the existing domain.  I tried running dcpropmo on the new W2k8 server but it said run adprep /forestprep.  Since i already have a win2k8 DC on the domain, I didnt think I needed to do it again.  I ultimately want the new win2k8 R2 server to be the PDC Emulator and FSMO 5 role server.  Should I seize the roles from the current w2k3 fsmo server and assign to the existing Win2k8 DC and then try running dcpromo again OR how do I run dcpromo on the new win2k8R2 server and then eventually seize the roles from the Win2k3 server?  Do I have to run adprep again and if so, do I run it from the win2k3 dc using the 32-bit .exe (the new win2k8R2 server is 64-bit) or do i have any other options?

ADPREP /forestprep must be run on the Schema Master of a forest and under the credentials of someone in the Schema Admins and Enterprise Admins groups.

ADPREP /domainprep must be run on the Infrastructure Master of a domain and under the credentials of someone in the Domain Admins group.

I ran into similair issues when I did this the first time. You need to read this carefully:

There is no need to seize anything. If done correctly you can simply transfer the FSMO roles after domainprep & forestprep is completed

But since I already have a W2k8 DC mixed with the 2 win2k3 servers, wouldnt I have had to already run the adprep commands during that time?  Do I have to do it everytime I introduce a DC?  This will be the first 64-bit win2k8 server in the mix of DCs.

No, it just has to be ran once. If it is prompting you to run it again, I'd do as it request. You should only have to run it once. If this is the first R2 DC on your domain it is normal for it asking you again it is probably saying something about a read only DC. If so, you can click ok & go on.

I did try to click ok when i was prompted and warned about the read-only.  I thought it bumped me out though and wouldnt let me go on.  Yes this is the first win2k8R2 server to be promoted.  Would i run the adprep from the existing fsmo holder (win2k3) and still use the 32-bit even though im adding the 64-bit server??

Can I just use the gui from the Win2k8R2 server where it has the roles to add and then would that do everything I need?

the adprep commands must be ran on the specific FSMO role holders. Please refer to this post to make sure you run the correct cmd on the correct role holder.
