Mobile Computing for the field workers

I have a question for everyone here.  I'm looking into the best solution for data entry for our field workers.  Employees are out and using pen and paper to write down data, notes, ect.  Then they return to the office and re-enter everything once or twice leaving great opportunities for human errors.
I'd like to know what everyone else is using and how it is going.  What apps are you using and how is the data being transfered from the device to the respected database.

Windows Mobile Symbol's are mostly used for data entry. Either the apps are custom or depending on the company there might be one of existence.

We have a lot of customers doing field service with Intermec ruggedized handheld computers running Windows Mobile.

The applications are either custom ones developed by the companies themself or by using specilaized software of independent software vendors.

We difference between offline and online applications.
Online ones need a always (most of the time) available internet connection. The connection is into a private network of the companies. The apps are sometimes web based or dotnet ones with SQL Server CE and data replication in place.
Offline applications are easier to implement and the users get a bunch of data at the morning and give back there changes in the evening at the companies hub.
There are also mixed systems, where the main workload is loaded onto the device in the morning and minor changes or additional jobs are transfered to a user by SMS.

Here is a sporadic list of mobile solutions for field software

    and so on...
