In .Net I can authenticate the windows user against Active Directory.

Hi,
This is just a part of the answer you need..
The system named GLPI use ldap autentication, perhaps if you check the source code can figure how the do.

Be aware of licensing issues.

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

ADLDAP is probably the easiest way

Option 1:

Here is an excellent guide to allow users to authenticate against AD from a APACHE Server, which is most likely be your case.

Option 2:
and this link http://pear.php.net/manual/en/package.authentication.auth.storage.ldap.php provides information on Pear Authentication Library for PHP.

Hope this helps
