It's likely that these VMs have not been developed and tested for ESXi, but VMware Server 2.0.2 or VMware Player.

ESXi only work with pre-allocated disk (monolithicFlat) and this disk is probably monolithicSparse

Use VMware Converter Standalone as your target is an ESXi server.

Okay. I've tried the coversion different ways, and it's successful.

This VM must be converted before it can be used on ESXi 4.1 or ESXi 5.0.

I've used VMware Workstation Import Option, and selected Other, browse to the VM, and follow the wizard, and select the ESXi 5.0 server as the destination.

I've also used the Import function of vCenter, right click the ESXi 5.0 host, and select Import, Select source type of VMware Workstation or other VMware Virtual Machine.

Follow the Wizard and Import.

Do you have vCenter?

I've also just found a bug in VMware Converter 4.3 and ESXi 5.0, so do not use VMware Converter 4.3 with ESXi 5.0, but use VMware Converter 5.0

and this is how I've tested and complete the conversion.

1. Download and Install - VMware Converter 5.0
Download is here - http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/infrastructure_operations_management/vmware_vcenter_converter_standalone/5_0

2. Untar the gzipped tarball to a location on the computer you have installed VMware Converter 5.0. I've utarted the archive to my E:\ drive, using the directory OCS-NG-Server-2.0.1-Ubuntu-10.04-64bits, which happenes to be the same as the archive name.

3. Start VMware Converter.

4. Click Convert Machine

5. Select Source Type VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine

6. Browse to the location of the *.vmx file, mine is in e:\OCS-NG-Server-2.0.1-Ubuntu-10.04-64bits

7. Click Next

8. Select Destination type of VMware Infrastructure virtual machine

9. Enter IP Address of ESXi 5.0 server, my IP is 141.245.136.15

10. Enter root username and password

11. Select Next

12. Accept Default name, Select Next

13. Selecty a valid datastore, I'm going to use a datastore called NFS

14. Click Next

15. Click Next and Accept Defaujlts shown

16. Click Finish to Import.

17. It should not take too long to import.

18. You should see a VM created, and the disk will start cloning to destination.

19. Status will be running, and showing progress.
