Hi,

I am trying to use the wbadmin command line utility to do a system state backup on one of our new Windows Server 2008R2 boxs.

The Command I am running is:
WBADMIN START SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP -backuptarget:G: -quiet

When I run the Code as Administrator I get the following output from Command Prompt:

C:\Windows\system32>WBADMIN START SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP -backuptarget:G: -quiet
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool

Starting to back up the system state [11/10/2011 13:10]...

This will back up the system state from volume(s) System Reserved (100.00 MB),C_
OS(C:) to G:.

Summary of the backup operation:

Log of files for which backup failed:
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup_Error-11-10-2011_13-10-40.log

The operation ended before completion.
The system writer is not found in the backup.

I have tried to find the logs that it specifies and they are not there.

I have looked in the event viewer and found some errors. The errors from event viewer is copied in below:

Thanks for the reply

I have requested the Hot Fix but I am getting an error saying the system is unavailable at the moment so I will try to get the hot fix again later on. I have also attempted the steps listed in the artice you linked and they didnt solve the problem.

I was looking through the event logs and discovered an another which looks like it could be linked into the ones I am getting when doing a backup. After doing a little googling It says the error is caused by the system writter. The error is below:

Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details:
AddCoreCsiFiles : RtlConvertNtFilePathToWin32Path() failed.

System Error:
0xC0000039 (unresolvable).

Hi I have done the steps in the link you sent to me about the Capi error. I have noticed the files that are causing the system writter to not appear in the list are to do with program files. I think this maybe because on the Server the Program files are ceperated from the main system files. The System files are on C: and the Program files are on the D:

I did a bit of digging around and found that the Program files path has been changed to the D: drive in the registry.

Ok, then you found the cause of the Capi error. Because in my case the system writer is always there. Program File are also on C: drive in my test machine config.
Try to get that hotfix.

I have managed to get the Hot Fixe now but when I try to run them I get an error saying "the update is not applicable to your computer"

I have downloaded and tried to run all 3 of the hot fixes and they all give the same error

Wow. That is unfair. Yes, I meant if you contacted them according to this hotfix issue.
Are you sure you downloaded R2 (64bit) hotfix?

Yeh I am downloading the R2 version I have downloaded all 3 of the hotfixes (for x86, ia64 and x64) and tried to run them and still got the same Problem.

The Server is a VM that is hosted on hyper-v but I doubt that is what is causing the problem as I have never had a hot fix not apply due to it.

I noticed that hotfixes are for AMD and Intel chipset separated. And looks like they check your hardware. If you are using guest machine with Win 2008 R2 sure it could not find the hardware version.
