Configuring RAID arrays on one H700 controller

Hello Guys,

I have the task of configuring a SQL 2008 R2 server using a DELL R710 with 8x 146gb 2.5" SAS drives.  The RAID controller is the H700 with 512mb NV RAM.  What is the best RAID configuration for this SQL Server?  I want the best overall performance.  I was thinking of doing RAID 1 = OS, RAID 1 = TempDB and LDF, RAID 10 = MDF.  Would three arrays work on one H700 controller? has anyone ever done this?

thanks guys!

I haven't used that model but in the past whenever I configured a dell raid controller I usually called Dell Storage first to make sure what i wanted to do was supported. You'll need the service tag. If you don't have a dell license than I would go into the configuration and see if it even offers raid 1 and 10. If it does than it should work.

1 thing to remember RAID1 requires a minimum of 2 disks, and RAID 10 requires 4. With this config you won't have any hotspares.

    Thanks for the response dou2ble!

I actually have 8x SAS drives to create arrays with.  I was thinking to create 3 arrays on that one H700 controller.  RAID 1 / RAID 1 / RAID 10.   Just wondering if this was possible and if it's going to hinder performance???  I guess I can call DELL on this.

but maybe you can answer my question for the best way to allocate the SQL files?  which files do i put where? This is what I was thinking: RAID 1 ==> OS, SQL Databases; RAID 1 ==> TEMPDB, .LDF,; RAID 10 ==> user database.  If the 3 array is possible, would this work? What do you recommend?

Glad to be able to help.

With the 3 different RAID configs you're thinking of doing you will be using all 8 SAS drives is what I meant.

Your SQL install plan is how I normally did it and I believe is in line with best practice for I/O. I used to use RAID5 for SQL user DB, but then moved to RAID10 once I was able to get them to purchase the hardware.
