IE8 problems

Have been given a PC to fix.

PC is running XP Media Centre 2005.
Internet Explorer will not open, however when you try, you can see 2 iexplore.exe processes running, but no application comes up

Have tried to reinstall IE8 (you can not uninstall the original)
I have also gone into IE settings and disabled all addons

If I try to reset IE on the advanced page, the process hangs on the first task

Help!

thanks

Jim

add / remove does not give the option to uninstall, so I went into Windows features and unticked IE, rebooted, then reinstalled IE8, still broken!

Reset IE hangs at first task, sits there for hours doing nothing. End up killing rundll32 to stop it

Don't happen to know what reg keys etc reset IE deletes do you? Am happy to hack IE out of the registry if that's what it takes, but can not find anything on google that documents exactly what it does

I think you have got some sort of malware or operating system corruption that is causing this.

Open a command prompt while logged in as administrator. At the command prompt, run SFC /SCANNOW , allow to complete and restart. Does that help.  .... Thinkpads_User

yeah, already ran that - said that it had replaced some files, but still nothing!

also scanned for viruses and malware using several different apps for both  :(
It might be faster for you to reinstall XP. When it gets broken that badly, there are usually no quick fixes.

You might need to check "Show Updates" at the top, to see it......

See if this will uninstall it from the command line./....

Thanks for all your advise - took the plunge and wiped the PC

Too much effort for not enough money to do anything else!

Thanks

Jim
Thank you. I was pleased to help. Too bad you had to wipe the PC, but sometimes that is the only answer. .... Thinkpads_User
