Windows USB stick boot image with disk tools

I need a bootable usb stick image for a netbook with a corrupt ntfs file system. I'm avoiding isos as Unetbootin has not been working for me. I need a raw image file as i can't rely on Windows to produce anything for me, having no Windows box to hand at the moment.

format the usb stick as fat32 and make sure it is active
diskpart
list volume
select volume (the # of your usb disk)
active
exit
now using winrar/7zip extract the contents of the .iso to the usb stick
then boot from the usb stick

I was able to find detailed instructions for linux inside the iso thanks

ve3ofa - that's quite useful but i fear it omits vital parts regarding the syslinux bootloader
