Depending on your version of 7, you can download XP Mode  & run as a virtual machine.  The virtual machine can be deleted whenever you want:

Basically, it's called XP Mode and all it is doing is running a Windows XP Virtual Machine on your Windows 7 Desktop. So, to simply remove it, you can either just shut down the xp virtual machine or delete it as well. Visit this link for more information, on the bottom there are links under the Learn How Section.

If you are using Windows 7 Professional, download and install XP Mode and then you can have XP forever.

You can dual boot, but I don't think you can do what you wish above. Another approach (one I use on my own laptop) is to get a new drive and put Windows 7 on it. You can always put the old drive back in if need be. Get a bigger drive at the same time.

If the exam won't run in XP mode, then just image your system to an external drive;   install XP on the system;  and then just restore the image when you're ready to revert to Windows 7.

You can use any good imaging product to do this -- Acronis, Image for DOS,  etc.
