I have a profile on domain machine with a name ABC. which I want to recreate on same machine. (windows 7)

here are the steps I already took but no luck

I logged in as Admin
rename the ABC to ABC.old
logged out and log in as ABC with a hope that it will create a new profile but instead it created a temp profile with "TEMP" and when I logged out it delete the profile

Thank you for your help in advance.

Did you tried with a different user to see if you get the same temp profile?

Delete the .bak under ProfileID in registry (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList)
Delete profile under System Properties > Advanced System Settings > User Profiles

Reboot

Try to create the profile again.

I think the root cause is that you started off in a rather unusual way.  In your shoes, rather than rename that profile with a ".old" suffix it might have been better to simply copy it to another location.  Once that is done, the proper way to delete a system profile (including the registry entries) is to navigate to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings.  Once you're there, use the Advanced tab and click on the Settings button within the User Profiles section.  You can highlight and delete the user profile within that interface, and in addition to the files/folders it will clean up the registry entries, too.

the system is part of a domain (xyz.com) its not a workgroup, and I am only able to copy the default profile not the one I want to recreate (ABC)

Understood.  What I was suggesting was that if you do want to save the original information within that user profile, manually copying the profile folder (C:\Users\username) to an alternate location on another partition or machine.

If there is no entry under the ProfileList key in the registry for the user with ProfileImagePath oc C:\Users\ABC, and there is not an existing profile folder at C:\Users\ABC, then it might be a Permissions issue to the Default profile located at C:\Users\Default.

Everyone and Users = Read and Execute\List Folder Contents\Read
System and Administrators = FULL CONTROL.

Might want to repush the permisisons, by going into the Advanced Button>Change Permissions>and hit the bottom checkbox to repush these permissions once you verify they are set properly....
