Static IP address

I want to test this later when I am at the computer console
I would like to know if I can assign a static IP address to a computer that doesn't have a network cable connected to it. and if I reboot the computer would it be able to keep the IP address or loose it, since it s static not automatically assigned.

Thanks

You CANNOT assign an IP address if the network cable is NOT conencted.

And Prem is right - after you assign it - it will keep the IP even if the cable is not present anymore.

But you will have to have it IN initially to give the machine an IP.

Cheers

@mega666: IP Address can be asssigned when the network cable is disconnected.

I have few servers  that are in different switch , they have static IP addresses but they loose them when they reboot and they revert to 169.254.x.x [APIPA]

I want to disconnect them from the network and reboot them and see if they loose or keep the static IPs

The Network can be configured for a static IP whilst the Cable is disconnected or connected. Make sure request DHCP is off. On windows check the "Alternate Configuration" settings too.

you mean DHCP  client service needs to be disablled ?
where is the Alternate Configuration located ? and what do I need to do with it?
thanks

Since it is configured as Static IP no need to go for DHCP service...
And it wont get the APIPA

jskfan,

Just to confirm that again, on giving the static IP when the network cable is disconnected, it will have the same IP after reboot.

Any question, please let us know..
