My boss resently deleted a search folder from his Outlook 2010 and it deleted all the items in the search folder.  We are at a loss as to why this would happen.

The search folders in outlook are real pointers to the objects.  So therefore deleting them their will also delete them for real.  But you can recover deleted items even after the deleted items folder has been emptied.

click on the deleted Items folder then go to the folder ribbon tab and click on "Recover deleted items"

I did some testing on it.  Once you select the Search Folder and select Delete it states this will not delete the files but it did.

Deleting the search folder itself will not delete the files.  The files must have been selected also.
My guess is he clicked the wrong delete and only thinks he clicked delete folder...Right below that is delete all, which will delete all the emails that the search folder found..I can come up with all kinds of explanations of what happened. But unless you were recording his screen when it happened your never going to really know.
