Hello Experts,

Taking a frame like the one attached...

What is the best way to create depth perception... so what you see throught the frame seems in the distance.... much like a window?

I assume that you are talking about a static image here and not an animation.

And I also assume that you are not asking about making objects appear rounded such is done with shading, but want to know how to make your image have the appearance of depth of field.

The easiest way to show depth is by having several objects in the image otherwise, you have to rely entirely on perspective.

The general illustration rules for depth generally apply.

Objects should appear with a sense of perspective.

Larger things appear closer, smaller seem receded.

Objects higher on a plane seem farther away than things lower.

Dark objects appear to be closer, light objects farther away. (If you are dealing with landscapes, artists like to make objects both lighter, and shift the tint towards blue to simulate the affect of atmosphere  for objects that are very far away)

Objects in focus seem closer. The farther away an object is, the less focused it becomes. (This is subjective. The idea here is to simulate a photograph. It is not a technique that is always used)

Closer objects obscure objects that are behind it.

To sum up. Draw objects in perspective. Make distant objects smaller, lighter, and higher and make closer objects larger, darker, and lower.

Make closer objects hide the parts of the distant objects.

Oh yes, and having the black frame cut off part of an object so that it appears that the part cut off is obscured by the frame is a favorite technique.
