A user used Word to create a complex diagram that should of been created in Visio. Is there anyway to copy or open the Word document in Visio so that the work does not have to be recreated?

Unfortunately not, as far as I know. You can embed the Word doc in Visio, but when you double-click to edit it, it will open in Word. And if you copy and paste it into Visio, it will just be an image object. Sorry I have don't have better news...
