Backing up folders with no admin permissions

I have setup the native backup system in SBS 2008 premium using the setup wizard. When I checked the backup by running the restore wizard I found that several folders were empty. I think that this is because these folders only have the user's permissions and not admin permissions set (this was done at the request of management for folders containing sensitive info) I would like to know if (a) my assumption is correct that Server Backup does not back up folders that only have the user's permissions set and (b) is there any way around this problem ? (I have suggested encryption but the users think that it is too much of a hassle)

Thanks

John

I think that SBS works the same way as non-SBS domain. In your domain, you have Backup Operators built-in group. Put that user into the group and you will be able backing up files/folders without more rights. By default users of that group can back up all but cannot read and execute those files

I have now added the users who have access to the folders which are failing to backup to the Backup Operators group but the files in these folders are still not being backed up. Do you have any further suggestions ?

Thanks

The task that runs the backup was created by the backup wizard. I have checked it and the Check Box marked "Run with the highest privileges" is ticked. Do you think that I should change it to "backup operator" or include the group or user that does have access to the folders that art not being backed up?

Thanks

Yes, you should change this task to run on user account who is a member of "Backup Operators" domain group :)
And then re-try to do backup

It was fortunate that I checked the backups to see what was actually being backed up. It would have been a nasty surprise if I acutally needed to restore the data !
