the idle timeout can be set in a lot of places
    User account level
    Server RDP Connection Level

what are you connecting to - Terminal Services, RDP Admin Connection, RDS?

Destination PC is an XP box aswell.

RDP set up on destination machine by right-click My Computer, Properties, Remote. Remote Desktop - Allow users to connect to this computer.

Users belong to Remote Desktop User Group.

Are we looking at GPO on destination PC? Is set to non-configured.
User Account Level? On destination PC or Client? And if so where?
Server RDP Connection Level? If so where?

i don't think you can set it on XP workstations but tsconfig.msc would be where you would set the timeout on servers

GPO could be on both destination PC and source user - you can configure timeouts in both places.

So for the user check the OU and user configuration polices
    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Session Time Limits

Machine "Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Terminal Services, Sessions"

Ensure the pc you are using to connect does not have power management enabled for the nic.  If it does and shutsdown the nic after a given time of inactivity, this will disconnect your rdp session.
