SQL Server 2008 R2 - Error message [364] The messenger service has not been started - NetSend notifications will not be sent

I have set up a simple once a day backup job on SQL Server 2008. I have configured DBMail and successfully sent an e-mail from there.
I have defined an Operator under the SQL Agent and given that credentials for e-mail and NetSend (the server name) but cannot get the backup job to complete correctly. It comes up with an error "[364] The messenger service has not been started - NetSend notifications will not be sent"

Net Send is the protocol which gives popup messages in windows with alerts from other systems.  Microsoft has gone the way of them being disabled by default for several versions now because of the potential security vulnerability with untrained users.  If you want to use them, you must enable the messenger service on the sending machine, receiving machines and firewall in between.

Thanks but NetSend is no longer included as part of the Server 2008 build (which this SQL Server is hosted on) so I don't think I can enable it as it doesn't exist - or can I?

Nope.  It's something they have been working to get rid of slowly so I guess they finally did.
