Adobe InDesign How do I insert a Paragraph Break without any Return Key?

My keyboard does not have a numeric keypad and my Enter key gives me a column break.  I need a paragraph break.  Seems simple.  But, you know, with Adobe, nothing is simple.

How do I enter a Paragraph Break?  Hopefully, it is a keystroke since I expect to be entering more of these than Column Breaks...

Paragraph break is the same as line break. There is a button on the right side of your keyboard that is called Return. Hit once on it to get a line/paragraph break.

If you turn on Type>Show Invisible Characters you can see the Paragraph symbol. Sort of like a reversed P

Hi this might work?

Try copy and replace all your column breaks (left-click drag your mouse over the column break area and copy to clipboard, paste the column break into the "find" field) and just enter ^p into the replace field to change them paragraph breaks. That should work though it may lack control of your document.

^p = SHIFT+6 and "p" key

No, I have no Retun key.  As I said, I don't have a numeric keypad.  I am using a laptop.

I don't think a Replace All will help me.  In only the current document, I have several dozen pages already.  I need to use both Column and Paragraph Breaks.

Other ideas?

Thanks...RG

I am talking about regular keyboard on a laptop without the numeric keyboard. The button is on every such keyboard. It might have an icon such as a bent arrow.. Should be below the backspace button.

If you upload a picture of your keyboard I can mark that button in for you.

It's the same button as you would use to click OK of YES. Without it the computer is unusable.

Hey, I appreciate your tenacity!  Sounds to me like you mean the Enter key, not the Return key.  I have an Asus NX90Jq-B2 laptop with a full keyboard with two mousepads, left and right.

The icon with the bent arrow is on the Enter key which gives me a Column Break.  I still need a Paragraph Break whether or not it is associated with a Return key.

I could be wrong and certainly would appreciate knowing that.

Thanks...RG

Which version of InDesign are you using? I have CS3 on my laptop and the "Enter" key works just like a return key on a full keyboard (paragraph break). However, if I hold down the blue "Function" (fn) key while pressing the "Enter" key, it works like the "Enter" key at the far right beside the number keypad on the full keyboard (column/page break). It sounds like your laptop is doing just the opposite.

I have the most current trial version of CS5.5.  I paid some nut to produce a document for me and I am trying to resurrect the result.  As far as I can tell, his experience with ID was just about enough to get him in trouble.  Well, get me in trouble...

Actually, it produces a beautiful document.  But, the learning curve is deadly.  And, I am an expert consultant on IT infrastructures... <rant> I have avoided Adobe products because, as far as I can tell, my 5 year old daughter could build an easier-to-use user interface.  I get the feeling that they think if they make their product totally unusable they can better justify their ridiculous prices...</rant>

I have tried using Enter with Shift, Control, Alt, Function, Windows, etc....  Some give me Column Breaks.  Others give me Page Breaks.  None give me Paragraph Breaks.

That having been said, the sequence of Type | Insert Break Character | Paragraph Return gives me what I need.  The shortcut it mentions is Return.  Oooookay.  LMAO

So, still need the Return.  Or, a shortcut for the sequence I just listed???  Hmmmm.   Thanks...RG

Okay, I fixed it by modifying the Keyboard Shortcuts.  I changed the Num Enter to be a Paragraph Break.  I changed the Alt Num Enter to be a Column Break.  It wasn't all too hard once I figured out what needed done, which came to me at the very end of my last post where I said I need a shortcut for the sequence.

Thanks all for your help...RG
