    Accepted Solution

1/ you should be able to connect the external drive to the existing system, and then recover the files direct to the drive.  Recover to different folders, matching tape names may be desirable.

2/ it may be possible to copy the tape as a block image to the drive, but then recovery of individual files (the whole point of backups) will be difficult if ever needed.

3/ Does the Travan currently do a system backup for a bare-metal restore ?  This is something that most external drives do not do as well. Have to install the OS from scratch and then apply backup.  So consider when changing your backup regime.
