I have a client who provided me with a Verisign certificate; however it does not appear to be a verisgin certificate.  In other words, I think I got some sort of text file in error.  Can anyone tell me what extension I'd expect to see on a Verisign certificate and presumming one can be viewed what I'd expect to see in the file.

Typical extension would be .cer but could be .crt.
Would look like random text in a text editor. With
.cer extension double clicking should open details view.

Hi Shmoid,

Thanks for your response.  Do you know if code-signing certificates use the same extesnsions?

Yes, they are all based on the X.509 standard. If it is not viewable as expected you may be correct in assuming that it was corrupted. If you name it with a .cer extension and double click it does it open the certificate view?

As an example I've attached one of VeriSign's certificates (public key). If you save it and rename the extention to .cer and then double click it you should be able to view the details of the certificate but if you open it in notepad or other text editor it will just look like garbage text with the exception of the begin and end cert tags. I was pretty sure what I was seeing wasn't a certificate but as it was sent to me by a client who is also and IT professional I didn't want to jump incorrectly to the wrong conclusion.

Thanks again to Schmoid.
