I have a laptop running XP SP3 OS on a HP Laptop. I can't get it to connect. I've tried several scanners (Avast, SuperAntiSpyware & Malwarebytes) which came up clean. The computer appears to know that it is connect to the network but it does not communicate with it.
Any suggestions, comments would be appreciated!

Have you checked to see if your network settings are setup for DHCP?  Or is this a private network that requires a static IP address?

Which internet browser are you using and have you tried a different browser?

When was the last time you were able to access the Internet, what were the settings for your notebook PC, and has anything changed since then?

    Assisted Solution

Could be a DNS issue.  Have you tried to flush the DNS?

When you say appear to connect, have you verified b y running a simple ping or traceroute to an internet site?

    Assisted Solution

I would also check my proxy settings in Internet Explorer.  Often times, after removal of malware, it leave the proxy connection settings in place.  Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings.  If there are any checks in the "Proxy Server" area, take them off and click ok on all open windows.  Now try your internet again.  If there were no check marks in the proxy server section, that wasn't your problem.

OK what I have used to resolve the problem is some software called WinsockFix & LspFix utilities.
After running the programs and rebooting the laptop everything appears to be working just fine.

Thanking all of you for your suggestions!
