    Accepted Solution

Try System File Checker (SFC /SCANNOW at a command prompt and restart). Then download the service pack for your machine and try to install manually.  ... Thinkpads_User

    Assisted Solution

Click on "start" and click the "All programs" button, then find "accessories" and find the Icon that says Command Prompt and the Right mouse click command Prompt and select as Administrator.

you should be at a black screen with white letters

At the command prompt windows type this: net stop wuauserv and then hit the enter key

leave the command prompt window open

next go to the computer Icon and click on your C: drive, then click windows, then find a folder call softwaredistribution, either delete it or  rename the softwaredistribution folder.

the go back to the command prompt widow and type: net start wuauserv and hit enter

    Retry doing your windows update.

By running SFC I found directories that had problems with permissions.  Both answers assisted in having the Windows Update corrected.  Neither alone would have solved the problem.

    Thanks for the help.
