I want to install a Windows Server 2008 R2 RODC, in a Windows 2003 domain.

Domain / Forest Functional Leve:   Windows Server 2003

I am reading:,printer).aspx

-   adprep /forestprep
-  adprep /domainprep /gpprep
-  adprep /rodcprep
[ where is these commands run from the CD of Windows 2008 R2 on the Windows 2003 DC's ]

Is is true I have to have one Windows 2008 R2 DC in the domain so it can replicate to the RODC?

What are the steps to get the RODC integrated into my Windows 2003 Domain?

Yes, at least one 2008 R2 RWDC (Read/Write DC) is necessary in your network before you can deploy RODC. Also you need to remember that RODC doen't support Exchange on it (just only to information, according to selected zones of this question)

First of all, you need to prepare your environment to support 2008 R2 DCs and then deploy the first 2008 R2 RW Domain Controller. How to do that, you may find on my blog at

and then, you can deploy your RODC. Many useful information you will find in these MS documents at
