Redirect to https

Hi everyone,

I have a website that redirects pages pages in a directory from http to https. It has worked fine for years until all of a sudden this week it stopped.  The pages are asp.net pages that use a simple response.redirect in the on_load event to move the page from http to https. Now I am getting an internet explorer cannot display the webpage error.  I have no idea why.  I checked the SSL cert and it is current.  Is there some reason why this would happen.  I do not even know where to begin troublshooting on this one.

I suppose the first thing to look at is whether or not the redirected page works - i.e. what happens when you try to go directly to the target web page?  Does that work?

The error you've described does not seem to be an ASP error, but rather a communication error.  Can you confirm that the web site is running?  Can the clients reach the server?  what happens if you telnet from a client to port 80 of the web server - does the screen go blank? (that's a good sign).

If I remove the redirect and hit the page with http it works fine. Also all other pages on the site work. I only have a problem on pages that redirect to https

OK that's a good start.  Now, what happens when you try to manually connect to the redirected web site?  i.e. don't rely on the redirect - paste the URL of the SSL web site and see if that works.

If it does not, verify that the SSL web site is bound to port 443.

Are you able to telnet to port 443 of the Web Server from your client?  The screen should go black if it's successful.

This will do a standard TCP connection check.  If this fails, check for firewall rules which may be interfering with your connectivity.

When I try to telnet into the webserver on either port 80 or port 443 I get an error that says Could not open connection to host on port 23: Connection failed.

Then you are using Telnet incorrectly.  Here is a sample command

telnet 89.105.117.65 80

This makes a TCP connection to port 80 on IP address 89.105.117.65

telnet 89.105.117.65 443

This makes a TCP connection to port 443 on IP address 89.105.117.65

Please test both.

Incidentally, if you do get a black screen, it will be hard to get out of it, so just close the CMD window and open a new one for the next test.

Sorry, I was putting a colon between the IP and the Port.  When I use it correctly, port 80 connects but port 443 does not.

Excellent :)  then we have one of three problems:

1) The web site is listening on an IP address other than the one you are expecting.  Check the Listening section of the secure site
2) A firewall is blocking the connection.
3) A NAT Router has lost a forwarding rule.

Unfortunately, since this is your infrastructure, I can't provide much more assistance than that since I do not know all the components involved.  If you would permit me, I could remote control you using Teamviewer, and offer assistance after seeing the setup you have.  I will understand if you decline this offer.  If you wish to proceed, let me have your telephone number and I will call you through Skype to initiate further assistance.  You can also e-mail it to me at lester at netscenario dot no.

This will not cost you anything.  I also kindly request that no other people e-mail me for any other kind of remote assistance - you should always post your question on EE.

I've had a quick look at jwoodhams infrastructure, and it turned out to be a incorrect DMZ setting.  Strangely enough, this only affected HTTPS, and not HTTP, which is why it was never considered a potential issue before.
