Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have machines that have all 3 versions installed and I was wondering if this was normal or are you supposed to migrate from one version to the next.  It seems like some applications install their own instance even if another one already exists.  Even if multiple versions are installed, I only seem to see one set of services running.  I don't get it.

Is there a practical guide to managing all these versions and instances without becoming a SQL server expert?

You usually get this situation from visual studio as I will install SQL for you. I would suggest moving all you databases (backup, restore) to the r2 instance and removing the others.

Let me clarify: if this is the situation and all the databases are yours, then it's safe to move them. If you have any instances that are product specific, like Acronis, don't touch those unless you really know what your doing.
