Ralink Wireless UI button

A button has appeared to the right of my start button. I did not install any Ralink stuff, and I want rid of it. Right or left clicking has no effect. There is no Ralink stuff in CP > Add and Remove or in C:\Program files.

How has this button got there ? How do I get rid of it, please ?

Hi there, when you look in your Task Manager, do you see a process that looks like it is from Ralink? If so, you can try ending it using 'End Task'. Now hover over the icon, it should disappear. When this works, all you have to do is find (in registry) where it is (automatically) started and remove that entry. You can use HijackThis for this purpose. Note that you should not remove other entries with HijackThis or any items that you do not recognize. This may cause other issues.

OK I looked in Task Master and eventually tracked down raui.exe in \Program Files\EDIMAX\Common. I also found an info file at w.file.net/process/raui.exe.html.

All this leads me to think that this Ralink stuff has been put in when I installed a NETGEAR WiFi dongle recently. I tried to contact Netgear but their site would not accept the serial number of their own device so I am no wiser.

I have hesitated to rub the file out. I think I'll leave it unless something starts going wobbley.

Could be, what is the type of dongle you have? I mean something like WG111T.

Your Netgear dongle has an Atheros chipset (ath9k) so I don't see why you would need an Edimax driver.

Can you check the driver tab of your dongle in the network configuration? What driver do you see?

Hi, settings are here:

On the Windows “Start” button, select “Settings->Control Panel”

In “Control Panel”, select “Network Connections”

Right-click on <your wireless connection> and select “Properties” from the bottom of the menu:

This will bring up <your wireless connection> properties window.  Select “Configure” and then the "Driver" tab. What driver do you see?

Got it now.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\athuw.sys

File version 7.7.0.98

Incidentally, I am no longer seeing the Ralink Wireless UI button that caused me to make this post in the first place.

Before I had the Netgear dongle I had a Belkin dongle to go with the Belkin router. This failed and I replaced it with the current netgear unit. Then sometime later this unexpected button appeared.

Although strange buttons and things put me on guard, at the moment everything appears to be working OK and the Kaspersky anti virus is not picking up anything.

athuw.sys is indeed an Atheros driver that matches your Netgear dongle. Ralink chipsets are used in Belkin dongles.

In case you have any Belkin drivers left, I would just uninstall them.
