Ubuntu Side Dock

I am using Ubuntu OS. On my desktop I can see a dock(like in MAC). So my problem is when I open any window, some part of that window is getting under the dock. So I want to change the settings of the dock, so that Dock and the window should not collide or they should share the space on the screen or window must be above the dock.

Can anyone tell me how to do that. How to edit the properties of the dock.

If you are using ubuntu 11.10, the dock is the Unity launchbar.

Hit Alt-F2, input: about:config and hit enter.
In the Behiavour tab, select "Dodge Windows" for the "Hide Launcher" field.

    Close it.
