Program hanging when tab control selectedindex changed in code

I am having a problem with a tab control in that when I change the selectedindex in code the program hangs, I have tried using selectedtab as well and the same behaviour occurs.

If I manually change the tab by clicking on it that works, and if I add a command button with the command to change the tab that works as well. I have also tried introducing a delay with a timer and that also fails. I don't know of any way in which to find out what the hang is caused by. Everythng just stops working, but I can stop debugging.

Any ideas anyone?

There was a datarepeater on the form and it seems to be something to do with that, I have replaced that with a grid to see how I get on
